The Jawa (actually pronounced "ya-wah" but most folks here just throw in the "J" anyway) was designed by a Czech genious engineer early in the 20th century named Janeck. He called his new bike the "Wanderer" and it became known as the JAneck WAnderer--JA-WA. It was a revolutionary engine design for it's time and has been copied many times over the years. It really is a work horse and for this reason is a hands down favorite among east european retro bike enthusiasts, for its ability to take a licking and keep on ticking. It has a 2 stroke engine and you requires a mix of 2 stroke motorcycle oil with the gas. Jawa's 250 cc 2 stroke motor is much more powerful than a 250cc 4 stroke engine. For this reason, the vintage Jawa motorcross bikes have always been in big demand. They were also favorites on the ice racing tracks of Europe because of their enormous power vs size ratio. Jawa is not a big bike but it has a big feel to it. The vintage engine has that beautiful old "Thump thump thump" that makes old motorcycles sound great. No matter where I ride, people stop what they are doing to check it out and even the old Harley "grey beards" almost always give me a thumbs up from time to time (although snotty Harley Newbies with their clean pressed chaps and "Harley Davidson" cell phone covers rarely do but then who cares! haha)

60 to 65 MPH is a reasonable cruising speed. You will have to gently break the engine in for about 500 miles since the engine is newly rebuilt and you need to let the piston rings seat properly.  Even though it is newly restored, it is still a vintage vehicle utilizing really old technology so you will have to turn a wrench from time to time just like you would have had to have done had you purchased it new 40 years ago. People spoiled by the technology of today often forget this and then become angry when it doesn't crank first kick or they have to trouble shoot a spark plug problem or tighten stretched cables so that it continues to shift properly. We include a scanned copy of an original Jawa owners manual with all of our bikes and you can get tons of helpful info from the guys at the North American Jawa/CZ register. They live and breathe Jawas and are super friendly and always excited to help folks out with their bikes if they have any questions.

There is nothing more satisfying than cruising down a two lane road on a crisp day, hearing that classic grumbling sound, and watching people nearly run off the road checking out your ride.
